Many secondary roads have a glaze of ice due to low temperatures
SALEM — Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews and contractors have been treating roads and applying abrasives in portions of western Virginia since early this morning.
Freezing rain has created icy patches and slick spots on primary roads (1-599) and a glaze of ice on secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) in most of the counties in our district from Carroll County up to Botetourt County. Drivers will find the interstates (I-81 and I-77) are mostly clear with isolated slick spots.
In addition, with temperatures hovering around freezing, drivers should use caution and reduce speed on bridges, ramps and overpasses as the low temperatures may produce icy conditions. While roads may appear wet, ice may be present instead.
Crews are continuing to monitor road conditions and will respond as necessary.
