Wintry mix expected in western Virginia, so adjust travel around storm

A wintry mix of precipitation is expected late Saturday and Sunday for parts of Virginia.

SALEM — A wintry mix of precipitation is expected late Saturday and Sunday for parts of Virginia. Motorists should be vigilant, check weather forecasts in areas where they plan to drive, and adjust or delay travel in impacted areas, especially along and west of the Interstate 77 corridor.

The New River Valley and areas along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains are more likely to see accumulating snow or ice as winter precipitation overtakes pavement temperatures to create slick roads. The difference of just a few degrees of temperature will affect driving conditions.

Ahead of the storm, Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors will apply brine to interstates and some primary roads in mountainous areas as a pretreatment. Equipment operators will be monitoring conditions on Saturday and Sunday to plow and treat roads.

Prior to travel, motorists should visit 511virginia.org, call 511 or check the 511 Virginia mobile app for up-to-date information on road and traffic conditions.
