STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
*UPDATE* Mile marker 0 to 41, westbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for tree trimming operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*NEW* Mile marker 1 to 3, eastbound and westbound – Alternating lane closures for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) intersection for maintenance to bridge over railway, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through June 30.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
SECONDARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 633 (McKinney Hollow Road) – Closed at Cowpasture River bridge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 15, and again Monday to Thursday, March 17-20. Closures are for removal of adjacent truss bridge. Follow posted detour. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 64
*NEW* Mile marker 43 to 48, eastbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for traffic sensor installations, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

INTERSTATE 81
*NEW* Mile marker 174 to 183, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
*NEW* Mile marker 176 to 178, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge inspections, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday and Monday nights (March 16-17).
*UPDATE* Mile marker 198 to 197, southbound – Overnight left lane closure for environmental cleanup, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday night.

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 11 (South Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 609 (Red Mill Road) and Route 737 (Dog Town Loop) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 10.
*NEW* Route 39 Alternate (Main Street, Goshen) – Closed between Route 39/42 (Virginia Avenue) and original alignment of Route 39 (Maury River Road) for railway maintenance, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Follow posted detour.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 
AUGUSTA COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 64
*NEW* Mile marker 88 to 96, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures at various locations for bridge inspections, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights. 
Mile marker 95 to 98, eastbound and westbound – Overnight single-lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of March 30. Daytime shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through March 31. Traffic restrictions are for bridge painting. 
*UPDATE* Exit 99, eastbound – Narrowing of on- and off-ramps for inspection of I-64 overpass bridge, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 8. 
Exit 99, eastbound – Overnight narrowing of ramps to and from Route 250 for bridge painting, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 29. 

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 218 to 221, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night (March 9). 
Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures 24/7 for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in summer 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. 
*NEW* Exit 221, southbound – Left or right lane closed along ramp to I-64 eastbound beginning March 10 due to overpass bridge work related to I-81 widening project. Ramp lane closures expected to continue through summer 2025.
Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures southbound from mile marker 223 to 222 for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through March 27. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. 
Exit 225, northbound – Right shoulder closures along off-ramp for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*NEW* Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of March 30. Daytime shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through March 31. Traffic restrictions are for bridge painting. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 42 (Buffalo Gap Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) and Service Route 9819 for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through March 20. 
*UPDATE* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures between Nelson County line and FR-Route 212 for painting of I-64 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through March 31. 
Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures near I-81 interchange for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through March 27. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 633 (Patton Farm Road) and Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through March 27.
Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive through May 2025 for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor. 
Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025. 
Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor through June 2025. 
Route 5119 (Oak Lane, Waynesboro) – Local traffic only between Lyndhurst Road and Windsor Road through April 30 for road work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project. Flagger traffic control for local drivers, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Through traffic will be detoured.
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.


ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 81
Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1. 
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight ramp closures and alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange projectwith completion expected in September 2026.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 254 to 250, southbound – Alternating shoulder closures for brush removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 2025.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Evelyn Byrd Avenue during daytime or overnight hours due to bridge construction. Occasional full closures as needed. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026. 
Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Temporary traffic signal between Route 1601 (New Haven Road) and Route 1605 (Water Street) for maintenance to North River bridge, 24/7 through June 30. Vehicle width restriction 11 feet.  
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 867 (North River Road) for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.
Route 800 (McCauley Drive, Timberville) –Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (South Main Street/Timber Way) and Fourth Avenue for sidewalk construction, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through May 1.

PRIMARY ROADS
Business Route 211 (West Main Street, Luray) – Shoulder closures between Route 616 (Leaksville Road) and Memorial Drive for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through April 1.
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81
*NEW* Exit 279, northbound and southbound – Narrowing of off-ramp and right shoulder closures for inspection of bridge over Stony Creek, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 299 to 294, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. March 9 – April 17 nights. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through March 24. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for inspection of bridge over Cedar Creek, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday night (March 7). 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 211 (West Old Cross Road) – Eastbound and westbound alternating closures near I-81 interchange for inspection of overpass bridge, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Route 211 (West Old Cross Road) – Westbound left lane closures near I-81 interchange for maintenance to I-81 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 23. 

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 601 (Battlefield Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 696 (Racey Lane) and Route 643 (Walnut Hill Lane) for inspection of I-81 overpass bridge, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.


FREDERICK COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 302 to 300, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. March 9 – April 17 nights. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through March 24. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 
*NEW* Mile marker 313 to 319, northbound – Right shoulder closures for survey work, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 noon Friday.

*NEW* Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound right shoulder and right-turn closures near I-81 interchange and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) intersection for rock and soil testing, 7 p.m. to 12 midnight Wednesday evening.
*NEW* Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) – Southbound overnight alternating lane closures near Route 37 interchange for bridge inspection, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
*NEW* Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound and westbound right lane closures near Clarke County line for inspection of bridge over Opequon Creek, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. 
*NEW* Route 50 (Northwestern Turnpike) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures near Route 37 interchange for inspection of Route 37 overpass bridges, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights. 

SECONDARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 600 (Back Mountain Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 611 (White Road) and Route 608 (Wardensville Grade) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 28.
*UPDATE* Route 667 (Sir Johns Road) – Daytime closures near Route 668 (Shady Creek Road) intersection for stormwater pipe work, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Traffic will be detoured during work hours.
Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour. 


CLARKE COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Westbound right lane closure near Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) and Loudoun County line for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 28.
*NEW* Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) – Northbound and southbound right lane closures near Clarke County line for inspection of bridge over Opequon Creek, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) beginning February 3 for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour. 


WARREN COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 66
Mile marker 1 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for sign installations, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through March 24. 

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for inspection of bridge over Cedar Creek, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday night (March 7). 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 300 to 299, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. March 9 – April 17 nights. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through March 24. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Northbound or southbound left-turn lane closures approaching Route 627 (Reliance Road) and Route 661 (Fairground Road) for soil and rock testing, 7 p.m. to 12 midnight Wednesday evening. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.
